52 killed as rains wreak havoc in KP, Balochistan

PESHAWAR/QUETTA: At least 52 people were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and FATA in rain-related incidents, as a fresh spell of monsoon rains wreaked havoc across the country on Wednesday.
Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) spokesman Adnan Khan conformed the deaths of eight people to Daily Times across the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in rain-related incidents.
He said two people each were killed in Tank, Charsadda and Karak and one each was killed in Mardan, Mansehra and Dera Ismail Khan. Matani police station official confirmed two deaths in the area when the roof of a house collapsed due to heavy rain. He said the PDMA had declared emergency at all hospitals in the province and established an emergency cell that was continuously monitoring the flood flow in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and providing information to the masses regarding flood and relief activities initiated by the authority.
According to unofficial reports, 25 people were killed in Swat and Shangla districts. Residents said that 21 people were killed in Shangla, while four were killed in Swat.
At least seven people, including two security officials, were killed in a roof collapse in North Waziristan Agency, political administration officials said. In another incident in the agency, five member of a family were killed when a roof of a house collapsed.
Two security officials were killed, and another two injured by electrocution in Jag Malai area of North Waziristan. According to reports, a man was killed in Khyber Agency as well. The monsoon rains, which continued intermittently throughout the day, exposed the preparation of the municipal services across the country, as almost all major thoroughfares were submerged by rainwater, causing traffic jams and immense hardships for motorists and commuters.
Most public transport went off the road and people were seen wading through flooded streets and roads.
Major roads in the northwest that remained heavily flooded by rainwater included Nasir Bagh, Regi, Pir Bala, Shahi Bala, Warsak Road and Budani-Charsadda Road.
The Ariyana and Mathra areas were also flooded by rainwater. In Balochistan, heavy rains followed by flashfloods have severely disrupted relief operations in major parts of the province, as more villages have been submerged in Dera Murad Jamali. The rain started on Tuesday night and continued until Wednesday evening, aggravating the flood situation in Sibi, Jhal Magsi, Dera Murad Jamali, Subhatpur, Dhaddar, Jaffarabad, Naseerabad and other adjoining areas. Several villages were submerged and people took shelter on the high ground and rooftops.
Three persons, including two children, were killed and another five injured as mud houses collapsed in Usta Muhammad and Dera Allahyar areas of the province during Wednesday’s rain.
Seasonal Nari River was in high flood and the discharge was recorded at 150, 0000 cusecs. The river poses great threat to nearby villages in Sibi and Kachhi Plains. Power supply in Dera Murad Jamali and nearby villages could not be restored so far.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday forecast widespread rains for Punjab and Islamabad during the next 24 hours. The rain spell may be scattered on Friday and could result in flash flooding in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and DG Khan divisions. The Met office said heavy rainfall was expected in the upper catchments of river Jhelum and could flood the Mangla Dam.
